Antoine is head waiter in a Parisian restaurant. Returning home one evening, he intervenes just in time to stop a stranger committing suicide. But the stranger, Louis, is furious. Feeling strangely guilty at having saved this unhappy man's life Antoine does everything he can to make things right. He finds Louis a job, and, little by little, a friendship develops.

But despite Antoine's unstinting efforts, Louis remains gripped by a single obsession: Blanche, the love of his life and the woman who drove him to despair. Saying nothing to his new friend, Antoine resolves to find her. But things don't go at all to plan.
