In May 2001, Jon Muir and his dog, Seraphine, began an odyssey to cross Australia on foot. For 128 days, he survived entirely off the land, relying on ancient aboriginal techniques to survive. Often close to despair, he drew on his deep understanding of the land, instinct for survival and remarkable inner strength to continue. Two thousand five hundred kilometres later and on the point of starvation and exhaustion, he completes his trek. Filming his journey en route, Jon provides an engaging and articulate commentary documenting his achievement.

Jon Muir is no stranger to extreme adventures. “He’s in a class of his own,” states mountaineer Greg Mortimer. “He’s one of the most resilient explorers on the face of the planet.” He has climbed Mt. Everest, walked to the South Pole and paddled alone in a sea kayak from Port Douglas to the tip of Cape York. Yet this solo walk, which takes him across four of the driest deserts in the world, was his toughest challenge to date.

“Why do I want to walk across Australia? I’d like to have a better understanding of the land in which I live,” Muir explains. His only equipment on the journey is two trekking poles and a home-made cart containing a few essentials that he pulled behind him. Along the journey, most of his food would come from what he could scavenge en route. Lizards, termites and snakes provide him with an invaluable source of protein.

One of Muir’s most difficult challenges was finding water. Traversing the world’s driest continent, he needed four litres a day to survive. Complicating things further, most of the water he finds is salt water. “It takes me over four hours a day to desalinate my daily supply,” he complains. At times, Muir is reduced to slurping the muddy rainwater that gathers in animal hoofprints.
