The year 1945, the last months of WWⅡ. The American and Soviet intelligence agents are frantically looking for a secret Aparat, a decoding machine with which the Germans decode Soviet ciphers. In this way they get access to information about the American atom bomb that Soviet spies send to Moscow from Los Alamos.

Among the code-breakers operating the Aparat hidden in the basements of Czoch Castle is the Polish agent Johann Jorg, planted among the Germans by the Polish intelligence before the war. Natalia, a radiotelegraph operator sends out Jorg’s messages. She is a German, whose father was murdered by the Gestapo. That is why she decided to fight the Nazis. She has a secret crush on Jorg, whereas he is enchanted by Anna Maria, a niece of the castle owner.

Hans Jacob Globcke, security boss, supported by unscrupulous SS-man Beer reigns supreme in the castle. Globcke begins to suspect Jorg of being a spy of the Allies and frantically looks for evidence. He succeeds when monitoring stations discovers Matalia’s radio station and she is, consequently, arrested. The brave girl, despite tortures, does not betray Jorg, but agrees to cooperate with the Germans.

A secret organization in Paris, run by one Joanna, a German, receive Natalia’s cables.

Joanna fully realizes that Natalia’s arrest means breaking off contact with the castle at a decisive moment. The time is crucial, as the Russians, having been notified about the Aparat, want to get it at all cost. So, Joanna sends a group of commandos to the castle with Polish officer Andrzej Czerny among them. He knows Jorg from the time when he rescued him from the hands of the Gestapo. The commandos force their way through terrains occupied by German soldiers, fiercely fighting on the way. They reach the castle and take secret information from Jorg. One of the commandos paratrooper agent Afgan remains with Jorg as his radiotelegraph operator. The mission accomplished, though not all of them return alive.

Despite those sacrifices and heroics, Globcke turns out smarter. He sends out a bogus convoy with a would-be Aparat, which is destroyed by Soviet planes. He in turn takes the Aparat deep into Germany. Jorg and Afgan flee the castle at the last moment, but have a long trek before them.

On the way they blow up an electric plant that supplies electricity to an underground atom laboratory. But they are down on their luck when they encounter and fight the NKVD. Jorg is wounded and Afgan stays behind to shield his companion.

Jorg gets to Rosenheim, where Globcke is waiting for him, having decided to give the device to the Allies in return for documents that change his identity and assure him a peaceful life after the war is over. He declares, “I’ve been fighting Bolshevism all my life since I concluded that it’s a worse evil than Nazism.” He fails to disappear though as an SS organization has new assignments for him.

The war is coming to a close. Somewhere in a bombed out German town Jorg and Anna Maria pass each other, Jorg, however, knows by now that Natalia is his true love.
