The plot is set in the ninth century, a hundred years before the coming of Christianity to Poland. The country around the Goplo lake is ruled by Poplie, “the bloody prince,” who murders all his relatives to secure succession for his son. His crimes lead to a peasant revolt. Ziemek, a young hunter and warrior, is in love with Dziwa, a beautiful daughter of the peasant Wisz. The girl is offered by his father to the service of the gods, but Ziemek decides to fight for his love. He meets Piastun, a former commander of Popiel’s army, and joins him in the fight against the ruler’s injustice.
