All films produced or distributed on nitrate stock are now over fifty years old. Unless already transferred to safety stock, all this footage from the early days of cinema is decaying with growing speed. Quite a lot of it may be beyond repair before the current decade is over.
At the same time, colourfading is starting to affect early colourstock, while the vinegar syndrome is proving extremely destructive for most footage on acetate stock that isn't even fifty years old.
For film libraries and film archives pressure is growing fast to put adequate effort in saving their priceless collections.
