THX Ltd. is gearing up for the debut of a new movie trailer for HORTON HEARS A WHO! from Twentieth Century Fox Animation's Blue Sky Studios (opening March 14, 2008).
Developed in partnership with Fox and Blue Sky Studios, the latest THX trailer features characters based on the beloved Dr. Seuss book, including Horton voiced by Jim Carrey, and the Mayor of Who-Ville voiced by Steve Carell. The trailer will debut in THX Certified Cinemas around the globe beginning this holiday season.
"HORTON HEARS A WHO!, with its emphasis on sight and sound, is a perfect fit for a movie-themed THX trailer," said Ed Rice, director of global marketing at THX. "We are thrilled to partner with Twentieth Century Fox, Blue Sky Studios and the stars of HORTON to produce this trailer. As one of the most anticipated animated features for 2008, we are confident that the film and trailer will appeal to moviegoers of all ages."
HORTON HEARS A WHO! is about an imaginative elephant named Horton who attempts to prove that a tiny speck of dust is actually a microscopic world called Who-ville. Horton is the only character that can hear the inhabitants of Who-ville as they call for help. The filmmakers leveraged this plot to help build the trailer's theme, playing off of the familiar THX tagline "The Audience is Listening" and THX Deep Note audio mark.
"THX trailers have become fan favorites and pop culture icons, known around the world for delivering incredible entertainment experiences," said Jamie Hamilton, exec director of feature film promotions at Fox. "Partnering to develop a THX trailer offers moviegoers a sneak peek at some of the HORTON characters and the storyline, while delivering a high impact surround-sound and visual experience that THX fans have grown to love."
Meanwhile, THX is kicking off the holiday season with the release of its newest trailer for THX Certified Cinemas. AMAZING LIFE is the latest in a series of cinematic trailers to feature the THX Deep Note audio mark and state-of-the-art visual effects and animation.
The AMAZING LIFE visual effects were led by Eyestorm Prods., with contribution from Joseph Minadeo. Eyestorm is a Venice Beach production and creative production company founded by former Lucasfilm artists Kyle Ruddick and Michael Klima.
AMAZING LIFE focuses on photorealistic organisms of various shapes, sizes and colors, growing from a metallic surface. These creatures appear organic in nature, yet foreign to anything on Earth. As the story unfolds, the organisms grow to cover the surface of the metal, with each one communicating through their own unique sound. These sounds build upon each other, becoming more harmonious, and eventually culminate into the THX Deep Note crescendo. A final panning shot reveals the metallic surface to be the THX logo covered by these vibrant, living, musical creatures.
For AMAZING LIFE, THX turned to veteran composer, Marco d'Ambrosio, to design the more than 160 sound tracks featuring voices of Speaker Flowers, Helicopter Plants and other unique organisms. The final mix was completed at Lucasfilm's Skywalker Sound under the direction of award-winning re-recording mixer, Gary Rizzo.
THX Ltd. (www.thx.com) was founded by filmmaker George Lucas to improve the way movie audiences experience the sights and sounds of feature films on the silver screen. The goal, then and now, is to continually improve the entertainment experience through strict engineering performance standards, innovative product designs and breakthrough technologies.
